TRANSIENTS

Characterising FRB through their continuum radio properties

This project aims at studying the late-time or persistent radio emission in two classes of transients: a) compact binary mergers, with particular regard to their connection with GW sources; b) Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs).

Radio follow-up of Tidal Disruption Events (TDE)

Theoretical models predict that when a star approaches a supermassive black hole (BH) closer than the tidal radius (∼20 Schwarzschild radii for a 106 solar-mass BH), the BH tidal field is able to overcome the stellar internal gravity and pull it apart. Matter falls onto the BH, producing a powerful flare with peak accretion rates up to 100 times Eddington, which decays with time as t−5/3, i.e a Tidal Disruption Event (TDE).
